Title: General Gaming news thread
Post by: madmaltese on July 28, 2015, 08:14:56 pm
This thread is for the smaller gaming news that comes out that isn't really worth its own thread.

So most recently......MAFIA 3 Announced!!!!!!!!! Reveal in August!!!

Great idea, Mad!

Dragon Quest XI has been announced for PS4/3DS/NX.

Two different games based on the same story similar to Ni no Kuni.
Both games slated for 2016 release to coincide with series 30th anniversary.
The two games will still have the same core staff working on them.
Is being made for the PS4 and 3DS (probably New3DS)
PS4 version is developed with the assistance of Orca.
PS4 version runs on UE4
PS4 version is open(-ish?) world. Similar to DQVIII
3DS version is developed with the assistance of Toy Logic.
3DS Version presents a classic 2D Sprite style on the bottom screen.
3DS version will have 2D sprite battles + random battles when playing with the D-Pad and 3D battles when playing with the circle-pad.

Environments look amazing. Jak though looks a little strange. He was always looking more adult as the games go along but that just looks off.
Would still kill for this to be made one day :(

Yeah, he looks too realistic on those first two pics.

Jak and Daxter is my favourite Naughty Dog series. I've always admired them for what they've done with the series. Turning Jak and Daxter, a traditional platformer, into Jak 2, a much darker sandbox game.

Anyone seen the stuff MS showed off at their Gamescom conference?
Pretty good overall all and so happy that Halo Wars 2 got announced :D
Scalebound looked incredibly underwhelming though. Everything from the gameplay to the main protagonist to the style just wasn't impressive to me.
Thankfully Crackdown and Quantum Break look good :)

dayum.

They also said that you can play for 400 hours and not see everything.
I think there is a point though where too much is too much lol. A big part of me actually enjoys finishing games and seeing everything it has to offer. The Witcher 3 is already so hard for me to pick up and continue just cause it is so big.

This is interesting. Would you say your connection with Jak was still strong as he aged throughout the games? I felt more connected with him in Jak 1 and 2, and I think 3 certain times i felt more distant maybe because he got too "adulty"

btw

would make a nice movie sometime hehe

for me personally I feel that the series was set perfectly with my life at the time where it was aging and getting more mature just as I matured and started to enjoy more story and character driven games over just good platforming.
In regards to Jak 3 i felt the story itself was the strongest but yeah the connection to Jak the character wasn't as strong as he sort of became just a piece (major piece) in the overall story and not really just the main character.

Jak 2 was the most ground-breaking of the trilogy. It's my personal favourite of the three. Jak and Daxter was a pretty traditional platformer (a very good one, though). Jak 2 was a revolution with its sandbox features and darker theme, while Jak 3 was more of a finetuning of Jak 2's concepts.

Some exciting stuff from PSX 2015:

- Final Fantasy VII Remake Gameplay Trailer:

Looks amazing (and much further along in development than I thought). On the other hand, the new combat system looks more action-oriented than I had hoped. Still, I haven't been this hyped about a video game in a long, long time

- Ni No Kuni 2 has been announced for PS4:

Looking gorgeous. I loved the first one

- New Ratchet & Clank trailer:

Although I found PSX conference to be a little disappointing overall (No Sony Bend game announcement, no Santa Monica main project :( ), those all look amazing! Was hoping Level 5 was working on a Dark Cloud project but I know that Ni No Kuni is highly regarded so will definitely check it out.
Uncharted 4 and R&C look spectacular and FFVII remake, like you said, is way further in development than I expected.

Apart from the games you mentioned, I thought the Adult Swim indie games, specifically Death's Gambit & Rain World looked really good.

I still need to finish Ni No Kuni lol, but it was pretty good when I played it.

My first reaction was this:

There had to be a catch somewhere.

After thinking about it some more, I'm going to reserve judgement until we get more info. If this means we're getting Part 1 (e.g. the part in Midgar or the entire Disc 1) at the end of 2016/beginning of 2017 I can certainly live with the decision. FFVII was a massive game in terms of content, so perhaps this is the only way to give us a full remake.

What did you think about the trailer, LZ?
Title: Re: General Gaming news thread
Post by: madmaltese on December 07, 2015, 06:14:20 pm
I'm gonna try be understanding and wait for more info. It must have to do with a timeline issue. Knowing SE, it would've probably taken until at least late 2018 to complete the full game. I'm still hopeful but it did seem too good to be true :(

Honestly, from the trailer, I was rather impressed (not hyped though, but impressed). Final Fantasy XV trailers have shown more impressive stuff, which felt more hype worthy. This is factoring in personal bias too. (Much more the Zelda fan hehe)

I think development has been shortened, because it looks like they're probably reusing a lot of the engine / design from Final Fantasy XV, which certainly would speed things up (similar to FFXIII, and having faster turnover for FFXIII-2). I'm a big Ninja Gaiden / Devil May Cry fan, so the combat changes to the more action oriented FFXV style actually suit me more. All the overworld exploration part looks quite nice too, similar to FFXV.

As for the episodic release, they did say that it wasn't going to be a straight up remake. And this certainly isn't the kind of game that would have the same episodic releases like Telltale games etc. It certainly makes sense, that if they want to make a proper huge game, they need to release it in parts, to keep up funding by having people buy the initial episodes.

When they first announced the game, and even after seeing the trailer, I honestly think that to do a proper full on remake, the development cycle would still be a minimum of 3 years, and knowing SE, probably closer to 5 years for a full release. If they release development in parts, then you're probably looking at, as you said, initial release probably in a year (which would give 2 years development for the initial episode), and then an episode being released approximately every year to year & a half. I can't see the first episode release going beyond Midgar. Releases will be closer to 2 episodes per disc.

I probably won't be buying the episodes until it's all released (I still don't have a PS4 yet anyway), which by that time (I'm thinking 4-5 years, basically end of PS4 life cycle), there will probably be a collection released, or by buying them individually when on sale, will save a lot.

This is a follow up statement from SE:

'It means instead of concluding in one entry, multiple entries are being considered in development. Each entry will have its own unique story. As a gaming experience, each entry will have the volume of content equal to a full-sized game.'

Maybe episodic isn't the best words for this. It could literally be 3 full games like FFXIII and all its sequels. That statement also pretty much guarantees each game will be priced as a full release title.

That doesn't give me any further confidence. Still worded as obvious media damage control.

I still stand by what I think will be happening. The fact that they say that they believe each release will be equal to a full-sized game, means that each release will be priced as a full release title, irrespective of the fact that each game will be guaranteed to be shorter than say FFXV or their other typical releases.

Remember that FFVII was a multi-disc game, which doesn't happen anymore. Games nowadays are typically shorter in length than they were 10 years ago.
One of the SE developers even said in a previous interview that it would take 3-4 times the development cycle of FFXIII to port FFVII to a similar style.

It's going to be FFVII released over several parts/episodes. Doesn't matter how you want to name it. They will be adding additional story content to bulk up each title (which they've mentioned), I'm sure.

They already did that with the last set. They went with the axes/dimensions of XYZ (given that it was on the 3DS and entering the 3rd dimension, it's kind of fitting).

Hell no! There's a hundred million 'exploration' games. My biggest worrying factor of UC4 is that they announced that the environments are 10x larger in open space. That's not what I want from uncharted. I swear it's like people want every single game to turn into some open world rpg.
Uncharted is and always should be about action, big set pieces, jaw dropping scenery, characters and an enjoyable plot.
There is literally next to no more linear big budget linear experiences anymore, don't advocate for killing the one remaining quality franchise. There's plenty of other games that offer what you want.

Look at Rise of the Tomb Raider. All it's highlights are from the tight 'set piece' areas. Every time it opens up into an area with side missions and all that bullshit it slows the pace down to a crawl and got boring.

Dude the gunplay in that series is among the worst in modern gaming. I literally fell asleep during uncharted 2 because fighting was the worst. Great opening, and I wanted way, way way more of that. I want an entire game that's just that kind of tension. You're climbing and exploring alone, but you're vulnerable and the tension comes from the environment. That'd be amazing.

I'm not saying the gunplay is the highlight either. It's the set pieces. THe E3 trailer of UC4 is everything I want from an UC world. I don't want 'exploration' in the sense of openness. I want scenes like the cargo plane and cruise shit in UC3, or helicopter in UC2. Stuff like that. Keep it tight, keep it moving and send me on a trip around the world. The weakest part of UC is the 'waves' of enemy sections but that is not fixed by turning it into some more open ended, multiple path crap.

So apparently SE need to sell 10 millions copies of FFXV to make up their investment. I'm assuming this covers the movie, anime, demo, game, etc. Really going all out on this universe and I hope that if it's good enough that they get rewarded financially. Nice to see a company be so confident in it's product. I feel like we are going to have a few games in this FFXV world.

Oh dude, open world and exploration are NOT the same thing. NOT AT ALL. I want the same thing you do, but when I say exploration, I mean tapping into the joy of discovering something beautiful. I loved seeing Shangri-la for the first time, for example, but then I had to fight waves and waves of dudes. And that shit is BORING. I agree with you, give me the cool locales, show me a fucking ADVENTURE. But don't bog it down with combat that does nothing but degrade the rest of the experience. I want cool stuff to happen, I want Nathan to be his snarky-ass self. Just with less genocide and murder.

You have to remember it's still a game. UC4 will still have all those amazing locales and discovery but in the end its still an action adventure game. Plus you have to fill the game somehow. There's no game ever that can just do all that without the gunplay. It would just be a 3 hour walking/climbing/jumping sim. UC does a perfect job of mixing things up and keeping everything fresh enough. The gunplay is the weakest of the elements because the rest is so damn good.

Also you focus way to much of the 'moral' side of some games. Not every game is sending a message. 'Murder', 'genocide', etc.....it's a game. A fictional game. You can talk about those things when speaking about a game like Spec Ops which is actually focusing on morality, but not on any and every game.

The next God of War game may leave the pantheon of Greek gods behind and invade Norse mythology, if a large leak of concept art and other assets is any indication.

The leak, comprising dozens of environment and concept paintings, shows longtime protagonist Kratos — or a character that looks similar to Kratos — sporting a beard and carrying an axe, and a representation of the Bifröst Rainbow Bridge. The artwork was uncovered by NerdLeaks from the personal website of an artist who worked at God of War developer Santa Monica Studio in 2015.

All I ever said is I'm not giving those fuckers my money because I know better. I've learned my lesson. You're the one that got super defensive when I've stated my stance. Kids kids we all know CoD > BF

BUT WW shooters >>>> modern / futuristic / scifi shooters. I miss the WW2 times, recently replayed the MoH games and the first CoD's and absolutely loved them and their (relative) historical accuracy. WW1 is a step in the right direction imo.

I'm not that interested in either to be honest.

a) Agents of Mayhem was all CGI, I lost interest a couple of minutes into the trailer. When we see some gameplay it might catch my interest though, if it's kind of sci-fi future open world sandbox, might be fun.

b) Horizon is a cool concept, I just don't think I'm interested in playing it. On paper, hunting robot dinosaurs sounds awesome though.

One more week til new footage for the new Zelda game...  :noes:

Bioshock is getting remastered to run at 1080p/60fps. Pretty sure I played that in 2007. lol consoles.

Also back in my day collections of old games like Midway Arcade Classics, Intellivision Lives, or Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection were cheap budget games. All these "remastered" games sure are cheaper to make than new ones though :]

I just drove home from a party at 2am and had the app running. Someone used a Lure at a stop in the center of my village, and there was a car idling with people in it, and a random kid (looked like 15-16yo) on his bicycle withhis phone in his hand. Special considering the app still hasn't officially been released.

I'm cautiously optimistic. I definitely like what I've seen so far. Loved that video of the first 50 minutes. I also don't mind the two-month delay.

On the other hand, the previews and leaks have been pretty mixed so far. I'm pretty sure I'll like the game though.

Really? I haven't seen some of the latest gameplay demos, or previews. But the stuff I'd seen so far had been very good. Likewise, FFXIII had a lot of faults which garnered mixed opinion, and it still rated pretty well critically. At a guess, I would think FFXV is gonna be in the 8s range.

What aren't people liking about the game at the moment?

Performance issues aside (as that seems to be what the delay is about), the last few previews haven't been as optimistic as earlier ones. Their showcase at this E3 showed a big scale boss, yet the gameplay looks very rudimentary if not flat out boring at times. Since then there has been mixed opinions on the main cast of characters also. I'm also just negative by nature, especially when games have been in development for so long. Either way I'll be getting it.
Title: Re: General Gaming news thread

I'm mainly talking about the leaks and reactions that I've read about on neogaf. There's a lot of negativity there. That said, the reactions of people that have actually played the latest version (first three chapters of the game) have been largely positive. The only issue seems that it's lacking polish, which makes the two-month delay a good thing.

And as I said, I really liked that video of the first 50 minutes. I've seen enough to know I'll be pleased with the game.

I don't know if you've watched the extended version of that boss fight, which looked much better than the MS stage demo at E3.

But like you, I'm referring to negativity at places like neogaf and other previewers. I sure the 2 month delay will fix a lot of the polish issues.

Awesome stuff Xaph and D :D

If it was going to be my first PS4 I definitely would get a Pro. May as well be as future proof as possible at the time. With that said D, Black Friday will probably have some amazing PS4 deals. Already a UC4+PS4 Slim for $299 announced as a standard so just imagine BF.

Default, it's all speculation at this stage. I'll believe it when it happens. They can't really say much against it if they are forcing developers to spend more money programming a game in multiple ways or go back and work on games that are no finished and also block them from making back their expenses.

I was just gonna get the Slim.

But my TV isn't 4k ready, and I doubt that I'll upgrade to a 4k TV in the next 5 years, so probably wouldn't need it til PS5.

PS4 Slim will still have HDR with a patch is my understanding, and I don't even think my TV supports that either.

Any other reason to go for Pro over Slim?

There are numerous benefits even on 1080p screens.
Games are going to have different settings depending on what monitor it detects. Rise of TR for eg then also has 2 1080p modes where you choose either you get to unlock the 30fps and push it towards 60 or to keep it at 30fps and it improves the graphical fidelity of the game. Most games will be doing this.

Also if you are ever interested in getting VR in the future, Pro will have vast benefits.

Given the fairly small price difference for a system twice as powerful, I think it's worth it.

I think it's $440 vs $560 AUD, as the difference.
And yeah, you get better processor, 1TB vs 500gb hard drive.
I guess the main benefit will be games running at a smoother framerate of having super sampling.

The hard disk size may not matter, I generally get physical copies of games.

And I have no interest in VR at the moment. I think it works best in flight/space sims at the moment, but my favourite genres are all 3rd person, so it's not a big deal for me.

Just something to note regarding the PS4 and X1. Game size is the exact same whether you buy physical copies of games or digitally. It basically installs the entire game on the HDD and then just uses the disc as a licence to play it. So for eg, with my 500Gb hard drive, I basically have to details things off it all the time. Biggest game from memory was COD BLOPS 3 at like nearly 60Gb (that was physical copy), even witcher 3 which I bought digitally was only in the 40s. Also you need double the required space to install and play games. So if a game is 40Gb you need approx 80Gb free for it to install, as it first dumps it, then unpacks it then gets rid of the dump (so still only takes the initial 40Gb of space).

Long story short. 1Tb>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>500Gb :P

It doesn't bother me too much since I'm usually only playing 1/2 games at a time and there are very few games I go back to when completed so I just delete games as I'm done with them or let it fill then do a clean up when I don't have anymore space.

So, PSVR tomorrow......

It's good, but it makes me sick. You can't adjust the intraocular width (the space between the lenses) and my eyes are weird to it makes everything look double unless I press it really far down on my face which hurts my nose because I have a weird one of those too. So... ehhhhhh? Thumper is amazing, rez infinite is amazing. The rest of it is... alright? PS VR's library is huge though, and that really helps vs the vive/oculus.

Augmented reality looks a lot more interesting.

My PSVR is at the store ready for pick up :D Very keen. Never tried it yet either. Going in cold turkey. I'll let you know what makes me sick mole.

I think Augmented reality will be more popular because of it's social capabilities but if you look at how it's been used so far it is far more gimmicky than VR. In Pokemon Go it was the first thing I switched off (literally after like 10 min). Plus knowing the dumbed down generation we have now it will be popular cause someone will use augmented reality to have like snapchat filters live on people's faces or some stupid ass features like that. Probably Silicon Valley (the show) style live mustaches in AR. VR has potential to be amazing and I really want it to kick off. It's applications outside gaming excite me even more tbh, things like Virtual tourism or VR sport or live events, etc.
Title: Re: General Gaming news thread
Post by: linkzero on October 12, 2016, 06:10:22 pm
Augmented reality as a gaming tool, is probably going to suck in most cases. Even prior to Pokemon Go, the Nintendo 3DS had the AR cards. There's been stuff with the Playstation Eye in the past. Stuff with Kinect. It's all sucked.
AR is awesome from non-gaming aspects though. GPS navigation with AR, museum tours with AR, there's a lot of applications which could be really cool.

VR has the better gaming applications. But I feel like it's much more restricted. It's obviously really only good in first person games, and personally, I feel at present stage, in flight / space sims, or racing games. I reckon playing any of those games, even in the early stages right now, will be awesome, no doubt. I don't feel like FPS fits yet, given that 'walking' by using a controller would still take you a step out of the game.

I'm completely uninterested in VR.

Same. Still seems gimmicky AF to me.

After a few hours playing around with a lot of the demos available and even non gaming applications, my mind is blown. Went in with mild expectations but they have been exceeded in every way. The software lineup is so much better than I would've expected, honestly one of the better launch lineups for a hardware I've seen. RIGS, Thumper, Rez are all excellent then games like Job Simulator, Batman, Battlezone etc top it off for some fun experiences. The biggest thing that surprised me and something I wasn't expecting was to see a 3rd person platformer. Don't know if you've tried it mole but the free Playroom VR has a platforming level and holy shit, it is legit. Easily the no.1 thing I want now is a VR 3rd person platformer.

For those calling it a gimmick, I'm just curious if you've tried it yet? Cause this is like the first time since maybe that awe moment when you went from 2D to 3D or the first time a game showed you how awesome gaming is. It is legitimately a new frontier of gaming, not a Wii like gimmick where you just play the same game with a new control scheme. Whether it gets picked up and supported is another thing but the potential is there.

In regards to nasuea or tiredness, my first play session (about 1.5 hours) I did get heavy headed after a while. It was my very first ever VR experience though. Never felt sick though but head was thumping a bit. Second play session hours later (about 2 hours) and I was perfectly fine. So getting the hang of it. It is definitely not something you just play for hours on end though which in a way is a good thing given the type of games available atm.

New Daytona USA arcade to be revealed in 2 weeks. Most arcades I go to still have the original from 1994, even modern arcades like Dave and Busters. It's crazy that the original still earns money, why even spend $10,000s to replace it? Excited to see what it is anyway.

New Zelda gameplay and again I will say that if this didn't have the 'Zelda' name attached that people would be completely indifferent too it.
Have no idea how any of that is supposed to be impressive at all.

The framerates of all the Zelda footage so far makes me want to die. Looks ugly too.

After Skyward Sword the name Zelda means nothing. I hope it turns out good, but like Star Wars Episode 7 I'll have zero expectations going in.

They're different games but when comparing how other games have evolved through the generations and we are now seeing things like the gameplay in Horizon, Mass Effect, God of War, etc, that Zelda footage looks bland, dated and tbh quite average.

Also that new Death Stranding trailer could possible be the bets cinematic trailer for a game I've ever seen. No idea what the game is but holy crap am I keen. Now let's hope it comes out in my lifetime.

Nearly the perfect show from Sony and all without the mention of so so so many previous announced major titles (God of War, Detroit, Days Gone, Spiderman, etc). Plus there's also an unnanounced Sucker Punch game well into development.

Even I've played TLOU you casuals, I don't even play video games. The Death Stranding trailer makes Nintendo Switch trailers look like they're from another decade. Hard to believe it's for a platform that's not even out yet. I guess I need to get a PS4 sometime with all these exclusives.

Personally don't think it's worth playing. Watching a good cut of someone running through and watching all the cutscenes will pretty much net you the best experience of the game.

Playing might bring a bit more emotional investment into the character, might enhance the experience slightly.
From a pure gameplay point of view, I'm not a big fan. Other games have better stealth action mechanics, and a more enjoyable gameplay IMO.

That's ok, it's easily one of my least anticipated Sony exclusives at this stage (Horizon and GoW being my main 2). Still have hope that they get close to Heavy Rain quality again though. Looks far better than Beyond.

Don't listen to link <_< Watching on Youtube gives you next to nothing of the emotional investment that you get when you play. There are legitimately tense and excellent gameplay segments in the game. Is it the best stealth action game, mechanic wise? No. But it's the best package by a long way where it blends the stealth, action, intensity with slow, quiet and peaceful moments where the game really shines. Don't watch on youtube.

Not to mention that many of the excellent interaction between the characters come from non cutscene moments, things they say to each other while playing or from optional conversation moments during gameplay.

Uncharted trilogy :tard:

Great but not as good as Uncharted. My favorite part of Uncharted is everything always at all times. My favorite part of TLOU is simply traversing the environments, looking at stuff, hearing characters talk. The game repeated the same cycle a few times:

1. We need to get over there
2. Oh no zombies!
3. The real enemy... is MAN
4. Stealth action time

The biggest difference between the two is tone. The cover stealth/action mechanics are fairly similar, especially to UCIV. There is crafting and survival elements in TLoU though.
The main positive TLoU has over Uncharted is it's environmental story telling and character development told through gameplay that most games simply don't do. It's difficult to compare the two as UC is just so light and fun while TLoU is a lot heavier and sometimes harder to play because of it. I found I'd play TLoU in shorter bursts than I do UC. But it's a must play. If you could only play one of UC or TLoU, I'd say TLoU cause as a standalone game it's nearly perfect.

I agree that you need the emotional investment to get the pay off. It's just such a chore to play, I don't really find the 'action' fun, or even satisfying. You're right, the best parts of the game is where it's quiet.

The other thing, is that it came later in the line of 'dadification of games'.
The Walking Dead video game did it first. Then Bioshock Infinite. TLOU does it well, but I wouldn't call it emotionally ground-breaking either.

Look it up, it's a thing. Games where basically you're a surrogate father for an NPC game character, designed to make you feel protective / emotionally attached to that character for story purposes.

I'm not that big a fan of Infinite. Thought it lost much of what made Bioshock great and in the end was basically a regular shooter. Even story wise it wasn't anything special. The Walking Dead though is great and has a good ending however it's a more cliched ending that you seein 99% of those type of movies/games that deal with a father/child esque storyline.

Became way too much of a shooter for my liking and didn't carry any of the atmosphere the first game had. If you class it as a shooter then it's a great shooter, but Bioshock was so much more.

Also left me with a bit of a sour taste since it was missing a lot of things that were shown off in previews and talked about.

Dont' get me wrong, it's still a great game. But imo well behind Last of Us and TWD S1 for story and characters.

Yeah Walking Dead was my favourite too. Can't wait for season 3 to come out.

Also, I didn't like Bioshock Infinite that much at the time. But on reflection, I like it much more. The gameplay was more fun than TLoU, and I don't really like shooters. But the use of powers plus the sky rails actually gave a nice flow to combat. Plus, the concept of infinite realities/possibilities being played out, actually makes sense in telling a story in the form of a game, since every save file, every reload, every time you play is basically an alternate reality in the narrative.

Bastion and Bioshock Infinite are some of the only games I can think of, where the narrative actually fits a game format better than anything else.

Powerful enough for a Nintendo console but hopefully it will be powerful enough to get ports of the major 3rd party games. Not that I would ever play them on the Switch but because it would help make it more successful.

It looked awesome to me. Co-op, Platinum Games action hack and slash, plus your ride and fight with a dragon. Too bad really, hopefully some other publisher can pick it up.

Nier Automata needs to be a hit, quality wise, for Platinum Games. This Scalebound news on the back of TMNT has them on a run of a couple duds.

Platinum Games has 3 teams working on different games at the same time.
I'm pretty sure one team works on the licensed stuff like TMNT.
In my mind, Scalebound is really the next major game from them since Bayonetta 2. Everything else has been licensed stuff (even Nier Automata)

Microsoft wanted them to fart out a sequel to a $20 budget title no one even bought for that and no one remembers or cares about but the devs wanted to make a bigger budget Phantom Dust that was actually good and Microsoft was like "No, we're not retarded no one is going to buy this game anyway" and cancelled it.

Not quite. MS gave them a tight budget and told them to make a very specific game in a very limited time frame but then continued to come back during development and added requests and changed the direction of the game (from MP to SP also) without expanding budget. The SP originally was planned to be 10 or so hours but an Xbox guy (forgot who) said it would be 30 hours in an interview to a publication without any knowledge of anything. Continually stuff like that happened and eventually it got canned.

I think I'm the only Fire Emblem fan here, but FE Gaiden (the second FE on the NES) is getting a remake for 3DS. They also announced a mobile game and the Direct showed more footage of FE Warriors. Switch is also getting a full-fledged Fire Emblem game in 2018.

I don't have time for so many more Fire Emblems and sequels. I loved Fire Emblem 7 on GBA but that's all I've really played seriously. I'm more of a Disgaea person. FE has fewer sexy demons.

Just downloaded it. I don't go to review events, so I'm late with stuff like this. WIRED's code of ethics prevent any of us from taking paid for trips or accepting gifts worth more than $20 (I often take t-shirts and give them away)

But, I tried the VR version before, and got really sick. So I'll be playing the normal version.

Two new Wii U games got announced today: Cars 3 and Axiom Verge. In August, Sniper: Ghost Warrior 3 was announced. Bloodstained is supposedly coming in 2018 (???). Darksiders is supposedly still coming out in a month or two. I don't think anyone would be surprised if Just Dance 2018 came out next year.

Switch is getting a Seiken Densetsu Collection, containing:

• Seiken Densetsu: Final Fantasy Gaiden (Final Fantasy Adventure / Mystic Quest) – Originally launched for Game Boy on June 28, 1991
• Seiken Densetsu 2 (Secret of Mana) – Originally launched for Super Famicom on August 6, 1993
• Seiken Densetsu 3 – Originally launched for Super Famicom on September 30, 1995

Her Story is currently in the pay what you want tier of Humble Bundle. Out of the ~6 games I've played this generation it's definitely in the top 6. Pay the $0.01...

It's not pretentious philosophical Mole indie garbage, it's not a shitty 8-bit roguelike, it's not My First Silly Unity Game, it's actually a legit unique and good indie game. Like from the times before everyone with a laptop was allowed to make a game and put it on Steam. And it's only an hour or two, kind of like a movie.

Did you guys see Atari is releasing a new console? They're also releasing a Flashback 8, so it's not just another Atari 2600 emulator box. I have no idea how it could be anything good.

So I've never fully played the Kingdom Hearts games but KH3 is interesting me. I assume it's important to play the past ones? If so, is that 1.5+2.5 one of PS4 all I would need to play?

I wouldn't call myself a KH expert, as I've only played Kingdom Hearts 1 and 2. I believe 1, 2 and BBS are the most important ones for the story, so you should be fine with 1.5 + 2.5.

I'd recommend playing the main ones before jumping into KH3 (or reading/watching an extensive synopsis). The story has become complicated enough as it is.

EDIT:
I forgot about 2.8, which supposedly contains a prequel to 3 that connects BBS and 3. I don't think that was included in 1.5 + 2.5 :tard:
Not sure how important it is, though. I think 1.5 + 2.5 is a good start.

It only comes with a download code :( I'm done with tying digital purchases to pieces of hardware. Steam is fine because I can just play my games wherever I want and it's going to be around forever. When I start having to manage activating and deactivating hardware and transferring licenses, I'm done.

So a lot of 'insiders' at neogaf are account suiciding and actually leaking 'info' that they know. A lot is Nintendo related. Of course these could all be 100% bs to f with the remaining gaf communited but here they are anyway:

-A sequel to a 3DS game is coming to Switch. Remember what was said about new character inclusion for Smash.
-Netflix (but not Hulu) is coming Q1. Announcement will be tied with a Netflix-produced show.
-Themes will arrive with a Dec. 25 update. Free if you own the game or amiibo.
-Metroid Prime 4 will have a subtitle that people know, Q4 at the earliest. First footage in January Direct.
-Little Mac was almost in ARMS. There's a reason he's not.
-A new spinoff is coming exclusively to the eShop using assets from a game already released
-Nintendo have a partnership with Square to fund The World Ends with You 2
-Nintendo have an exclusive FF game that is a remake however it will be co-op focus and Monster Hunter like.
-FFXV port is eventually gonna come to switch
-Capcom working with Nintendo to make an exclusive Megaman game.
-Capcom also testing porting games like RE4, Viewtiful Joe and Okami to Switch
-Platinum Games is working with Bandai Namco on 3 licensed games: An action adventure Sailor Moon game (with a transformers game sized budget). The 2nd is possibly Cowboy Bebop and the 3rd DragonBall or Gundam. These will be on PS4, PC and switch. Platinums next original game is a Golden Age, Streets of Rage inspired game and might be Switch exclusive. due in 2019.

Rumours about these games are a bit pointless though. Until they actually announce DMC5, SC6 or TWEWY2, there's nothing to get excited about, because excitement isn't going by rob change anything until it gets announced.

I think the DLC for already announced games are the more interesting info.

I think the SFV DLC is shaping up good, it would be nice to see more returning characters to the roster.

EDIT: Mitsurugi looks a lot younger. The costumes look very similar to the first Soul Calibur. Series reboot?
The new character they're teasing looks interesting.
I hope my boy Siegfried is in. I also hope there's a good singleplayer campaign. Would love to see a return of Soul Calibur 2's brilliant Weapon Master mode.

And Sophitia is also back, she was supposed to have died in 5.

And from the sounds of the narration "history hides away more than one truth" - does seem like a prequel/reboot.

Not sure whether they'll decide on some sort of time travel shenanigans to explain the reboot, a la Mortal Kombat.

I think it's post-apocalyptic horror following groups of survivors pitted against the environment, the monsters left over, and each other.

Soulcalibur VI will "revisit the events of the original Soulcalibur to uncover hidden truths with a diverse lineup of new and returning characters," Bandai Namco said. This seemed pretty obvious from the game's initial trailer, which showed a young Mitsurugi fighting against an equally young Sophitia and what appeared to be a quick montage of the story playing backward.

Sounds smart. I dunno if market research confirms it. But it sure feels like the characters in V were pretty forgettable. I don't really remember the new ones. Easier to bring back fans this way.

IV brought the Critical Finish supers, the armor damage system, and expanded character creation pretty well. V refined the supers with Critical Edges, and had Brave Edge ex-moves.

I think they introduced good mechanics, but their single player offerings have been largely forgettable. That said, only really Mortal Kombat has managed to have a substantial single player.

I agree, I think conceptually it's a pretty cool idea. It kind of turns your portable console into more of a physical creative/build toy.

I just don't think it will be that popular, and sell that well.

Nice to see the returning characters and their SC1 designs.

Very reminiscent of Ryu and Evil Ryu lol

Don't really care for it, to be honest.
In the story, he does go crazy from the initial Evil Seed, and it's only when his sister puts on the belt on him that he regains his sanity. He trains with Edgemaster to purify himself of the evil. So I guess they wanted to put that in as a gameplay mechanic.

The reason I think it might not be is because they have already done a Splatoon 2 and SSB is fairly easily to make a sequel to without a crazy long dev cycle.

I never bought the SNES classic mini, but that was the console of my childhood. In school holidays, my friend and I would head over to the local Blockbuster and rent different games to play each week. Later on, I'd play a lot of the catalogue through emulation too.

N64 classic mini, would be an awesome party console though. As long as they include Smash Bros, Mario Kart 64, Goldeneye, Mario Party, & Perfect Dark. My friends have bought out the ol' N64 at times for those party games.
A lot of great single player games too obviously, but they've been remade before too.

I'm interested in Default's take on the Billy Mitchell situation. I remember whatching the 'King of Kong' doco back in the day. He was easy to dislike, but a convenient villain doesn't always meet the meet the intended mark. Is he a dirty cheating mofo or are we dogpiling on an unlikable expert?
Title: Re: General Gaming news thread
Post by: DefaultGen on April 17, 2018, 08:09:51 pm
Billy's definitely an expert and a liar. He's the Lance Armstrong of video games. He's obviously amazing at games and legit got the first Pac-Man kill screen. You can watch him live at a convention tear up Pac-Man or Donkey Kong. He's also been forensically proven to lie about never using MAME and lie about using real arcade hardware in separate videos that we just happen have, let alone the fact that many of his scores have no video evidence. The only reason to lie about it would be to cheat.

Twin Galaxies in general is a scam. Nothing on their site means anything without a video to back it up.
Title: Re: General Gaming news thread
Post by: SM10 on April 17, 2018, 08:35:50 pm
Yeah, I remember watching something about him using MAME and feeling unqualified to discern the differences between his, MAME's and the arcade's version. As a layman it's easy to see pointed-to similarities between him and an emulation, but not know what to make of the differences.

Trailer starts out boring, like some Pokemon Go ad, but it's actually a proper Pokemon game for Switch!

And you can transfer Pokemon from Pokemon Go to it!

So this is basically Pokémon Go on Switch?
Trailer looks good and it'll be a massive commercial success, but I think I'll pass. I presume this is just a spin-off and not a replacement of the classic Pokémon RPGs?

It's like a bridge between Pokemon Go and proper Pokemon games.

If you look at 1:20, the battle system is more like regular Pokemon. The catching mechanic is more like Pokemon Go though. There are RPG elements with NPCs, and you're supposed too be able to explore the whole Kanto region.

What are the chances of the main core sequel being a revolutionary Open World Pokemon with real time action rpg elements and not just another classic pokemon?

It will definitely still be turn based RPG, it's a core element of the franchise gameplay, and allows for trading between generations.

Real time action RPG elements will be for spin-offs like Mystery Dungeon, Rumble etc.

Open world Pokemon would be awesome. But knowing Nintendo, it's not going to happen. They're online service is way behind other developers, and they've never made an open world game, or anything close, even on the Switch. Still a way way off, I would think.

Tunic - Zelda-esque game looks pretty good
: show

Fallout 76 - looks like more Fallout, no real gameplay but looks cool
: show

Crackdown 3 - Terry Crews being himself, with some pretty wild explosive / environmental destruction gameplay
: show

Just Cause 4 - taking on a private army, with your jetpack/glider & rope hook
: show

Also, expansion for Cuphead, new Battletoads game announced.

I think this was a really impressive showing. It's actually more impressive that I think Sony will be able to top this, seeing that they have some pretty big games up their sleeve with Last of Us 2, Spider-Man, Death Stranding, Red Dead Redemption 2, Shadow of the Colossus remake etc.

After everything that's happened with DMC franchise and Capcom sort of having a return to form, I was hoping they'd have a very centric classic Dante trailer. Also tbh after a full generation gap I expected the gameplay to look better. Doesn't even look at Bayonetta's level imo.
Title: Re: General Gaming news thread
Post by: linkzero on June 11, 2018, 03:55:18 am
They did tease Dante at the end. I think they'll save a more comprehensive Dante gameplay trailer for later. Seems to me that it'll be 50/50 like DMC4. The Nero gameplay with the arm mechanics is actually pretty good, so I don't mind too much. It is more of the same though, I don't think there's anything revolutionary that's been shown.

My impressions so far:
- I didn't watch the MS conference, but their line-up looks very solid. Their best conference in years? Not many major exclusives and no real megatons though.
- I'm very happy about Tales of Vesperia finally coming to Playstation in the West, along with the extra Japanese PS3 content. I've waited 10 years to play this.
- Apart from Vesperia, I thought Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice had the most impressive trailer so far.
- I really liked the Tunic trailer. Very Zelda-esque. Shame it's Xbox/PC exclusive. (EDIT: seems like it might be a timed exclusive. I'll keep an eye on this.)

Very curious about Sony and Nintendo's showings. Hoping for some FFVII remake footage and the new Fire Emblem reveal.

GC controller is a yes. CRT might need some work, but probably?

Nintendo seems to focus on one or two main games per conference. Super Smash Bros Ultimate looks amazing as a Smash fan though. They just kept announcing more and more awesome things on top of each announcement. Just as a base party game to play on Switch with friends this looks great. Would be interested to know what single player modes they'll bring back.

As for Sony conference, I actually thought it was great, not much in the way of new announcements to get excited for, but what they showed looked awesome, for me in particular Spider-Man & Ghosts of Tsushima. Death Stranding looks weird, I dunno if it'll be for me. Last of Us 2, I dunno, again not my kinda game, I enjoyed the first one, but not raving over it like most.

You should play Captain Spirit if you haven't already. It's a cool little side story to LiS 2 that gives you a preview of the new gameplay without giving away any of the main plot. It's like the Ground Zeroes was to Phantom Pain except it's free lol.

PS1 Classic announced. There are something like 8 systems you can hook up to your TV to play PS1 games, PS1-4, PSP, PSTV, Vita, and now this. I wonder if anyone on planet Earth is buying this to play those games rather than look cute in the shelf.

I would get one just for Ridge Racer 4 alone tbh. Easily my fav PS1 game ever.

Yeah, I've been wanting a meatier single-player mode for a long time. SCIV and V were disappointing in that regard. Seems like SCVI delivers

The list NEEDS Gran Turismo, Crash, Spyro, and Tomb Raider. Those franchises are so god damn synonymous with Playstation. And SOTN is the best PS1 game, needs to be on there. I don't care that these games have been re-released already. Is this the PS1 Classic or the PS1 "Random slice of games".

Destruction Derby 1? Rainbox Six 1? Syphon Filter? Fuck off Sony.

Crash and Spyro were never going to be put on it with their remasters out, no way Activision would give it to them and take sales away.
GT is impossible (just like Tony Hawk) because of licensed music contracts.
Tomb Raider definitely should've been on it.

My answer to everything is "It costs $100". What is that premium price going to if not the best games. SOTN was just remade too, but it's still stupid to release a PS1 without it.

You're obviously paying for the actual physical item + controllers much more than the games. Plus we both know this thing is going to be hacked incredibly fast and you'll be able to put on whatever games you like. A lot of the games you mentioned are out of Sony's hands.
Going to be the same issue if Nintendo isn't able to make a deal with MS to get the Rare games for the N64 mini.

Personally I feel like having their classic libraries available on their latest console is the better option, at least for gamers.

These mini classic consoles are the kind of product I feel is marketed towards people who don't really game any more, who might think this is a decent holiday gift.

I'm still nostalgic for SNES and N64. But if I had the classic, I wouldn't put much time into it, except as a party game.

Well yeah this is 100% a marketing gimmick for holiday sales. It works though. No doubt that for actually playing the games though the best thing would be having them available to play on current systems. Ridiculous that PS4 doesn't have all the psone/2/psp games that even PS3 and Vita have available in their store.

Dunno Link, I still have my original N64 with 3 or 4 controllers and I'd still buy an N64 mini on release. Some games are just ridiculously hard to find in a decent condition (cartridge + box + booklet), and I like playing games on their original controller (or something that looks/feels like it).

Also I'm a bit disappointed with the PS list. If Spyro and Crash were on there, it would've been a must-buy for me as I never really got to experience those games in their original form except when I visited Xavier.. although I understand why they aren't included it's still a bummer :[

These classic consoles also have quick save functions and stuff, plus are HDMI compatible, which is more complex in terms of connecting for older consoles.

But I think that you could release these collections on current  consoles, and a lot of third party or modders can get old controllers compatible with a console.
I guess it streamlines the process.

To me, I think you did still play for a few hours of nostalgia then put down.
I wouldn't play the games if already beaten, and I feel like most of the games I hadn't played probably weren't that great to begin with. If I really wanted to play them, I actually would look into secondary retro market, although admittedly it's probably a lot more expensive.

Not canceled, but delayed cuz the dev is having money problems (https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.pcgamer.com/amp/cyberpunk-sidescroller-the-last-night-runs-into-massive-legal-and-funding-issues/). Wouldn't be surprised if they make a Kickstarter to raise whatever money they still need. Would be a shame if the game does end up being canceled though.

I'm guessing they keep wanting to expand the scope of what they're doing.
Hope they manage to get the money issues solved.
I'm sure if they're legally allowed to Kickstarter (presumably already have contract issues with publishers), there would be no issues getting the funding. Even with the polarising community (this is the guy where there was controversy about men's rights or sexism stuff, right?)

According to their Twitter post, they had a lot more funding, hence doubled their team size and rented out an office in London. Then it became some sort of legal / financial trouble.
Could be due to any number of things, not necessarily the controversy (which I assume would have settled prior to their funding boost).

I guess it's because you'll also be financially supporting someone, or a team who may share a certain set of ideals. Do you want to be funding someone, giving them more power, and potentially a greater voice, if you don't agree with their fundamental values? Some would see it as committing a moral wrong.

The question of whether art should be separate from the artist, is a philosophical question that's existed for ages, across all forms of art, and before video games. Movies, TV, books, paintings etc.
In a way, it's a form of the question "does the end justify the means?".

Personally, from a philosophical point of view, I think that the means determine the end. I think it was Gandhi who put forth that you could bake a loaf of bread, buy it, or steal it. In each scenario, you end up with a loaf of bread. But how you obtained it affects whether it is a product of your own labour, a purchased good, or stolen property.

I understand that some people would find it morally conflicting buying a video game that was created by a guy with separate views from them but in that scenario you can just go by the old platitude that the Battlefield 5 developers told the fans; "Don't like it, don't buy it" (the fans took his advice btw and he got fired) but when people go out of their way to get a game canceled because they don't agree with one of the past sentiments of one of the developers is going too far imo. Video games are an expansive medium from all walks of life. One political point of view can't and shouldn't dictate the entire market. The generation of people that made current video games so popular are growing up and thus demand a more sophisticated form of media but all games shouldn't fall under a political spectrum all the time. They don't thanks to the likes of Nintendo and some indie developers but a lot of developers political background radiation are seeping into their games. Have video games really evolved enough as an art form to be taken seriously by the general public to provide meaningful political commentary? One of my favorite video game franchises is the Metal Gear Solid series. It is heavily political and super anti-war but it has a goofy and convoluted premise. It is still FUN and that's why it works as a video game. Isn't that the point of the video game medium?

I don't think people went out of their way to get it cancelled. Even around the time of the controversy, the studio/publisher that was backing the developer made an entire post about how they supported him:
https://www.polygon.com/e3/2017/6/12/15780174/the-last-night-twitter-history-gamergate

I can't imagine that they were somehow pressured to drop out now.

"Don't like it, don't buy it" works to an extent. But there has to be a line drawn at some point, one would think. If there was a video game that was released with the sole intent of brainwashing / promoting the genocide of a particular group of people or something, at some point it's wrong to allow such a negative voice to go unchecked.

For instance, aren't there propaganda video games used to recruit terrorists against US armed forces? Is that okay to have such a video game published on Steam or something?
Is it okay to allow something that is a potential threat to people's freedoms to go unchecked, for the sake of free speech and discussion?

I'm of the opinion that the art should be separated from the artist.
While many artists would like their works taken in abstraction, ie. leave interpretation to the viewer, I think that to fully appreciate a work, one must take it in the context of the whole, including the artist's intent/inspiration when creating it.
I think you can appreciate something's aesthetic value, while considering its moral value.

I'd say there is quite a big difference between 1) a game developed by someone whose politics you don't agree with, 2) a game containing elements that might be considered sexist/racist/hate speech/whatever, and 3) a game actively inciting violence.

In the case of 1) I'd say the art sould be separated from the artist. The people who want to include the artist's intent in their evaluation of a work, are free to do so but must acknowledge that their interpretation of the artist's intent could be wrong.
In the case of 2) I'd argue that the bar for sexism/racism/etc has been set pretty low by certain political groups. After all, who decides what is hate speech and what is not? Such a game should be protected under free speech laws.
In the case of 3) I'd think it would already be prohibited under current free speech laws.

I think that games are just starting to catch up to literature and film as a medium in this regard.

I agree with you for the most part. Where 1) is clearly okay, 3) is clearly not okay, and there is a shifting line somewhere in 2) where we must decide for ourselves, and society is always in flux on.

I know that it seems like certain groups are setting a low bar, but at the same time, I can see where they are coming from, because there is evidence to support how subversive sexism/racism that is pervasive in our culture can influence people, how we think about ourselves and how we treat others.
I think that it's so ingrained into our culture at this point that it's impossible to reverse. But that isn't a reason to give up and do nothing either.

In Kingdom Come's case the 'controversy' worked in it's favour anyway because it gave it publicity it never would've gotten and nearly everyone that looked into it knew it was bs because the game had zero racial or bigoted themes and on top of that was a damn good RPG. Game sold extremely well.

All the rage around The Last Night is a little different because in this case it seems to be the content of the game but no one knows what the final game looks like. This is all based on one tweet that hints at a different take on dystopian future than certain ppl want to hear. Let the game be and then judge it when it's done.
