Remember when free video games didn't exist?
« on: December 05, 2017, 01:38:58 am »
I played the shit out of Enemy Territory. It was crazy, an entire free standalone video game. A few years later Trackmania Nations was another big free release. I ever played Yaris on Xbox 360. I didn't play Yaris for 2 seconds. I probably put an hour into fucking Yaris. Besides all those, I was combing mods sites looking for any TRIBES or UT mods that weren't complete garbage, even though the majority of them were, desperate for that free gameplay.

This year alone, these are just some major releases that have been free or pay what you want:

F1 2012
Brutal Legend
Oddworld New ‘n’ Tasty
Grim Fandango Remastered
Tumbleseed
RPG Maker VX Ace
Borderlands GOTY
Zeno Clash 2
Sonic Adventure 2
Bionic Commando
The Flame in the Flood
XCOM: Enemy Unknown Plus
The Bureau: XCOM Declassified
Evolve
Sam & Max: Season 1
Sam & Max: Season 2
Puzzle Agent
Puzzle Agent 2
The Walking Dead – Season 1
Homefront
Saints Row 2
Cook, Serve, Delicious
GameMaker Studio Pro
STRIDER
Umbrella Corps
DmC: Devil May Cry
Killing Floor
SteamWorld Heist
Her Story
Worms Clan Wars
They Bleed Pixels
Galactic Civilizations
Space Hulk Ascension
Sins of a Solar Empire: Trinity
Galactic Civilizations II: Ultimate Edition
Arma: Gold Edition
Civilization III Complete
Civilization IV Complete
Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic
Star Wars: X-Wing Alliance
Star Wars: X-Wing vs TIE Fighter
Star Wars Galactic Battlegrounds Saga
Ace Combat Assault Horizon
Enslaved
Payday 2
Shantae and the Pirate’s Curse

Damn, that's just one year. Do kids know how good they have it? They don't need to browse Newgrounds and Miniclip trying to squeeze fun out of the rock that is horrible flash games. You could literally play retail games forever paying almost nothing, no F2P schemes or BS attached.

Anyway, just thought of this because Ubisoft is giving away World of Conflict and AC4: Black Flag for free. It probably won't make a news blip, but it would've made my entire winter break as a kid.

Yeah, I played ACIV a fair bit through holiday 2013. It's an amazing game, if anything, one of the best games to be released for free. There aren't that many big budget AAA games getting released for free, KOTOR is one of the others.

Where do you get your free game news, Default? Because I picked up a few of these, but not all of these. Are these all for PC, or are you including Xbox/PS?

I just looked through the lowest tier of the humble bundles for this year. Epic Bundle or Indie Game Bundle track them pretty well. I didn't even go through all the sites. Origin released Plants vs Zombies GOTY, SteamWorld Dig, Medal of Honor Pacific Assault, Theme Hospital, Syberia II, and Mass Effect 2 for totes free this year.

Nah all of these are pretty short lived, a couple days to a week.
