:( More painful than a thrashing
Since when did they add the goal line tech and instant replay stuff? Good that they added it, but would of been a very different result if not.
First World Cup for both. The goal line tech went live in club football a couple seasons ago if I remember right but the VAR (replay stuff) is only being used in the A League and a couple other leagues.
The goal line tech is great however I hate the VAR.
Why do you hate VAR? slows the game down too much? Part of me feels with less drama like disallowed goals and penalties it takes a lot of talking points away from the game. There is something oddly special about trusting a ref with all the decisions at that exact moment. What do you think?
The quickest way to sum it up is that the small benefits it offers don't come close to outweighing the numerous negative effects it has. After seeing it used for a full season in the A League and how it is implemented the clearest thing is that the idea that it takes away talking points from the referees is not only not true but it actually had the opposite effect. I have never seen so many matches where the focal point of the game was a controversial VAR decision. In the end it is still a person interpreting something and so the errors remain. There was a poll at the end of the season and about 80% of fans, journos and A League fans wanted it gone. Also when you slow things down, nearly everything looks like a penalty or a red card. Those skyrocketed and ruined so many games. Sort of how this WC already has a record number of penalties. It also encourages refs to do nothing since everything just get looked back on.

Another huge problem is that it totally ruins the best part about football. That second or two of explosive joy when a goal is scored. Football isn't a high scoring game and there are times where truly epic moments are just ruined because a 'goal' is scored then it's sent to be checked, then you wait 2-5min, then a decision is made. Even when it is given, that moment is gone. Then it's just people clapping like they are watching cricket.

The way it is implemented is also a huge problem as it is only used in goal scoring or red card situations. So for eg, in the Colombia v Japan game. A foul was incorrectly given to Colombia that led to a FK. It was clear from all replays that it was a foul. VAR can't do anything though. From that FK a goal was scored and Goal line tech was used to confirm and VAR could be used to confirm the goal, however it can't fix the previous error. So in essence it hasn't improved the decision making at all and you simply can't analyse everything in football because it is such a free flowing sport. Same with Aus v France, the main talking point was still that VAR decision, the exact same way ppl would be talking about if it shouldve been given if there was no VAR, VAR didn't change a thing, most people still disagree with the choice made (talking neutrals not aussies).

I like it only for checking for offside super quickly because that requires zero interpretation. Goal line tech is awesome as well because it is instant. VAR though destroys so much of what makes football great. Human error is part of the sport and that's fine, after seeing what the other option is I would gladly go back to how it was.
